Over the past year when we shut the door of our GE Advantium 120 the interior light sometimes stays on.

It's a little frustrating. Sometimes you an open the door and close it with the same force and the light goes off. Sometimes a little more force is required.Very inconsistent.

I purchased a replacement door hook (GE WB10X10021 Microwave Door Hook)

Very easy to put in; unfortunately it did not stop the light from staying on when we close the door.

The spring was still in tact when I took the door off. The only win from replacing it is the door seems to shut a little smoother.

Hard to say on this one since you replaced the door hook already which is a common part to replace. I would lean towards the door switch being the issue but again, these types of issues are hard to diagnose remotely.. this is the door switch for your model https://www.appliancezone.com/wb24x817-ge-microwave-door-switch/?ctk=af38862f-a81b-48d8-abdf-56c5e7dd7746

I'm willing to try it. Is it a difficult repair?

The diagrams aren't great but it doesn't appear to be that difficult to get to
Youtube is a good place to get a visual of what you need to do to get to this type of part

Purchased that exact part and went to replace it today.

When I pulled the control panel off the switch in the middle looked like an exact match.
Took the panel off and confirmed.

Swapped the door switch in the middle, made sure all was connected elsewhere and closed it back up.

Microwave turned back on, but I immediately noticed the door light was still not shutting off.
I tried to run the microwave and the numbers count down, but it does not turn to heat.

Pic enclosed.
I still have the old switch and can put that back. Is the door switch another one? I can't find a video specifically for this or a diagram.

Hoping someone with experience can help.https://appliancerepairforum.com/uploads/images/27a38a14-cb03-46ff-b8bb-772e.jpg

Hello,

This is the most common solution for this type of issue. Unfortunately if that did not resolve it you may need an appliance technician to look at it and properly diagnose the problem

I wound up taking it apart and making sure everything was reseated. I noticed that there was a small clip of plastic that made a gap and allowed the new switch to be able to move. I was able to make a small wedge with some electrical tape to hold it in place and that did the trick! Put it back together and not it's working perfectly and the light is shutting off as it's supposed to.

Hello,
I am glad you found that and it worked! I was stumped because the only thing I know that would cause this issue is that switch.. at least for now you have a solution... hopefully it works for you for years to come.
take care!
