Hello wise ones.

Kenmore Side-by-side - 363-50242000

Water dispenser is not delivering water. Ice maker is working fine. The dispenser line is fine (not frozen and I can blow air through it). When I push the switch the valve hums, but does not open. In the manual there are two parts with the same name: "WATER VALVE ASM". One part is the 'water valve' (WR57X10024) the other part is the 'water inlet valve' (WR57X10023) [I hope I have those numbers straight!!]
Given the symptoms, which needs to be replaced?

if the valve hums it should be working.... can you check the screen on the valve itself to make sure it is not plugged with sediment?

I can!
But which valve assembly should I look at? There are two.

Check the dual valve. One valve will have 2 outlets and one has a single. I am assuming the single goes to the water filter line.

So the hum could not be the the electromagnet trying to move the mechanism and failing? The water had good flow then stopped suddenly - I would imagine silt gradually clogging?

Yes a valve screen can get clog. A valve can also be tested for continuity as well. This will rule out whether or not its defective.

Forgive me again, when I think at this valve I imagine some sort of electromagnet moving a wedge out of the way so that water can flow. If the moving parts somehow got stuck, you would still hear the hum of the electromagnet, but nothing would move and the water would not flow. Is this not correct?
All that said, I will try to clean the screen, as you suggested, as soon as I can find someone strong enough to help me move the refrigerator so that I can get out of it.

Hello,
All this valve does is open and close.. when an icemaker calls for water or when the water dispenser arm is pressed a coil is activated which raises a chamber within the valve to allow to flow through, then it closes when the operation is complete.. this would be a valve such as this https://www.appliancezone.com/wr57x10026-ge-refrigerator-water-inlet-valve/

Exactly my point, if the "chamber" becomes stuck for some reason, wouldn't the coil (part of the electromagnet) still buzz angrily?

Hello,
Yes if the chamber stuck open it would be buzzing pretty loud but you would also have water gushing all over.. it is rare for them to totally stick open or closed, typically the valve starts to struggle if it is filled with sediment and sometimes works properly and sometimes doesn't work properly
