I have a brand new LG microwave.  It cooks ridiculously slow.  Is there a way to check if it is cooking the way its supposed to?  The model number is lmv1831st

Honestly, I would take it back to the place you purchased it.. you should be able to pop a bag of popcorn in 2 min or reheat a cup of coffee in 20-30 seconds.. if it cant do that I would say something is wrong
I have a 1,000 watt micro too and I can do the above in that time frame.

I think it may be defective.  Cooks unevenly and hardly at all other times.

Yeah sounds like you got a bad one, possibly one that was returned and put back on a shelf.. I hope the replacement works out for you...good luck!
