I have a Whirlpool over-the-range microwave (WMH32L19AS-1) with an intermittent fan problem.  Sometimes when you use the microwave the fan will turn on as it should, and sometimes it won't.  The fan works perfectly if you use the 'FAN' button on the control panel.  The microwave works normally whether the fan turns on or not, I'm just afraid that something is going to get fried eventually if the fan does not turn on to cool the megnetron and other electronics during microwave use. Thanks.

f these fans click on and off when told to by a thermostat.. if something is getting hot say a magnetron or even the microwave humidity sensor the fan will click on to reduce humidity or to cool internal parts. If this just started doing this then perhaps one of the thermostats or sensors is failing but its not unusual to have a fan click on run for a minute or more then click off even while the microwave is still running... is this something that just started happening? has the fan always ran continuously when the microwave is running and now it doesnt?

Thanks for your fast reply.  Let me clarify.  If I put a cup of water in the microwave and turn it on the one minute, the fan might come on and stay on until the minute is over, or it might not come on and stay off until the minute is over.  The fan doesn't turn on and off during oven use; it's either on and stays on until the cycle is finished, or doesn't turn on and stays off until the cycle is finished.  However, the fan always works properly with the fan switch.  If I'm not using the microwave and hit the fan button, the fan will come on and stay on until I shut it off with the fan button.  I hope this clears things up a little bit.  Thanks.

ok than you for the clarification. In this case you may need a certified appliance technician to diagnose this in person.. this type of issue is hard to diagnose without actually testing certain components while the microwave is actually running. It sounds like a thermostat to me possibly but this is just a guess at this point.
