My wife and I noticed a noise from our fridge the other month. Some inspection showed ice buildup in the drain channel of the cover of the evaporator assembly. This happened a few months ago under warranty, and the repair tech was nice enough to walk me through it so I took the cover off myself. There was a huge amount of ice buildup (pic attached) which I removed with a hair dryer. I put the system back together and the noise is gone, and the temp dropped to normal.

The question I have is regarding something I saw while I had the cover off. I've attached a picture that includes a black tarry substance on what the parts diagrams online list as PN DA61-04800A. I have no idea if this is just some sort of glue or if there is a leak in the refrigerant. Can anyone help me identify the substance and what I need to do (if anything).

Thank you!

Good afternoon and thanks for posting on the Forum!

That substance does not look like refrigerant though unfortunately I could not find out exactly what the black substance is. From what I can tell its an adhesive that is used on certain pipes in the unit.

I would recommend trying the JustAnswer Techs on this issue as you will get a guaranteed answer. You can also ask follow up questions as long as you need to. They will guide you through the process.. there is a cost, but for an average of about $20 it may save you a service call and possibly be able to fix your appliance at a minimal cost! The black substance is an insulation coating on the refrigerant pipes in the evap.  The white plastic piece is a sensor that is used to monitor the refrigerant temp.  normally this sensor is clamped onto a bare portion of the piping... so it has an intimate mechanical contact with pipe it imonitoring.  if you look on you tube you can see videos showing where it normally located.....as a firm beliver in if its not broke don't fix it... I would not disturb it everything is working satisfactorily.
