Our Whirlpool Microwave Model GH6178XPB - 0 periodically stopped showing code F7 which I think indicates a magnetron issue. Then last week it popped loudly and puffed a pungent smoke. After that it still seems to work but with VERY little power.

Yes the F-7 error code is power to the magnetron interrupted!
And as for this last time if it seems to be heating at 1/2 power I can only recommend replacing the 1,100 watt inverter.

Thanks for your help. Is this a part I can safely and relatively easily replace myself?

To replace the inverter the unit has to be removed off the wall and the outer cover has to be removed.
Now as for the safely you are working on an appliance that generates approx 5,00 volts during operation and it has components that can hold thst charge for a period of time before they bleed off .

If you have never worked on a high voltage microwave before I do not recommend starting now!
